Treatment of milking centre waste in sequencing batch reactors
AbstractThree 5 litre bench-scale sequencing batch reactors operating at three different temperatures and different cycle times were used to treat milking centre wastewater for a 6 month period. The results indicated that very high BOD5, COD, ammonia-nitrogen and suspended solids removal were achieved. There was no noticeable difference in the treatment efficiency of the sequencing batch reactors operating at 29·8 and 21·8°C. The treatment efficiency of the low-temperature reactor (10·5°C) was lower. There was no noticeable effect on the treatment efficiency of the specific reactor cycles studied. Denitrification was found to occur at the beginning of the react phase. The sequencing batch reactor system proved to be an efficient and reliable treatment method for dairy milking centre wastewater.
