The application of ecological knowledge requires a pursuit of wisdom
Highlights Ian McHarg offered a practical, applicable theory for design and planning. The Woodlands new community in Texas provides an example of the benefits of McHarg’s ecological planning method. Reflective practice can help advance and refine theory and methods in design and planning. Some ideas about the future of Ian McHarg’s “ecological wisdom” are suggested. Practitioners and scholars in planning and design need to be up-to-date with ecological science.
Abstract Ian McHarg’s “design with nature” theory contends that designers and planners should employ knowledge generated from a thorough ecological analysis of a place to guide actions. McHarg grounded his theory and methods in the science of ecology and pursued this approach in many projects, including The Woodlands planned community in Texas. While this theory has practical applications for landscape architecture and planning, it is imperative that practitioners and scholars maintain an awareness of changes in the ecology since McHarg's time, notably in landscape ecology, urban ecology, and ecosystem services.
