A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
AbstractVancouver's high growth rate over the past decade has been accompanied by far-reaching transformational processes, including economic and social change (‘restructuring’), the reshaping of metropolitan space (‘reconfiguration’), and new trading and socio-cultural relationships (‘reorientation’). Impacts of growth and change upon a uniquely fragile environment have led to the establishment of growth management as strategic planning priority both at the metropolitan and municipal levels. At the same time, there are legitimate concerns about Vancouver's economic prospects given the city's exposure to exogenous influences within a context of accelerating market integration. These circumstances suggest the urgency of exploring planning innovation incorporating principles and dimensions of sustainability (ecological, social and economic) within the Georgia Basin, Vancouver's bioregion and economic spillover zone.
