Information systems for urban management in developing countries: The concept and the reality
Abstract Microcomputer-based information systems seem like such a good idea for urban management in developing countries. Such systems are easy to use and relatively inexpensive to buy; yet they provide a quantum leap in processing power, compared to most manual systems. So why haven't microcomputers and information systems taken Third World planning agencies by storm? This is all the more surprising since, in some Third World countries at least, “micros” have already permeated the private sector to the same degree as in the industrialized countries. In much the same way, computerized information systems offer to add an exciting new dimension to urban management. Yet in spite of such promise, the truth is there are still comparatively few such information systems operating successfully in the Third World.
