Simulation of thick-walled cylinder test
Abstract To obtain more insight into the characteristic parameters influencing the strength of sandstone around a cavity, approximate numerical simulations of compression tests on thick-walled cylinders have been performed and comparisons have been made with experimental data. From these comparisons it can be concluded, that the material near the cavity wall reaches its peak stress state already at about 20 percent of the peak pressure on the cylinder. At the peak pressure on the cylinder a significant part of the material around the cavity is in the post-peak softening state of deformation.
