AbstractThe purpose of this paper is to examine possible benefits of combining mathematical programming models and expert systems. This paper discusses the relationship between operations research, decision support systems and expert systems. To demonstrate the feasibility of coupling expert systems with other existing computer techniques, this paper also discusses the design and development of an automated computer system, XPlanner. XPlanner is a knowledge-based decision support system which integrates an expert system with an integer optimization model and a database management system. XPlanner is developed to aid decision making in the area of facility planning management.
