A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
AbstractTianjin, the People's Republic of China's third largest urban area and a major industrial centre, had a 1990 municipal (urban and rural) population of 8.7 million people. As a large city with an economy growing at over 10% per annum, Tianjin faces a range of environmental challenges associated with resource use and waste management: growing water scarcity, air pollution, disposal of municipal and industrial liquid and solid wastes, and associated health problems. The municipality has responded with a series of regulatory, institutional, and other measures to manage the urban environment. The profile summarizes the state of environmental quality and risks in the municipal area, examines interactions between environmental status and economic development, and describes the institutional setting for environmental management. The article is a shortened version of a lengthier and more detailed profile that was prepared by the UNCHS (Habitat)/World Bank/UNDP Urban Management Programme.
