Abstract 1. A study was made of the effect of the initial composition of the reaction mixture on the formation of m-toluic alcohol, m-methylbenzylacetate and xylyl bromide. Reactions, which result in the formation of these products are of secondary importance in the mechanism of oxidation of m-xylene in acetic acid.
