U.S. farm women, politics and policy
Abstract Women Involved in Farm Economics (WIFE), as one of the first national organizations of farm women, has made women a visible force in U.S. farm politics and policy circles in the past decade. WIFE has given farm women experience in official positions at all levels. Leadership positions together with political pressures brought about by the women's movement have helped to draw WIFE officers into the leadership circle of agricultural coalitions and interest groups at state and national levels. This paper explores the emergence, orientation and initial influence of WIFE in comparison with that of their foremothers, who were members of general farm organizations and associated political movements. While the level of farm women's participation in farm politics and policy-making has changed, there is continuity with their foremothers in the orientations toward family farm and farm family welfare, education and unity issues.
