Anaerobic treatment of municipal landfill leachate using an anaerobic hybrid digester
AbstractA high-strength leachate from a municipal landfill site (COD 18000 mg/filter) was treated using an anaerobic hybrid laboratory-scale digester (1·9 liter digester volume) under mesophilic conditions. Depending on the sampling time, the leachate composition and characteristics varied considerably (1700–52000 mg/liter COD) and it was thus standardized to a COD value of 18000 mg/liter. It was found that the hybrid digester could reduce the COD of the leachate by 90% at loading rates of 14·53 kg COD/m3 day and >80% at loading rates of 20·54 kg COD/m3 day. Total biogas yields ranged between 5·11 and 6·89 m3/m3 respectively at hydraulic retention times of 1·2 and 0·9 day. The methane content of the biogas varied between 65 and 75%. System overloading was characterized by the accumulation of large quantities of volatile acids, especially propionic acid.
