Planning for forest conservation in the Auckland region, New Zealand
AbstractIn most western countries, further development of the conservation estate will depend upon the active involvement of private landowners. To enlist their support successfully demands an understanding of landowner attitudes to conservation and also the implementation of planning methods that will encourage conservation on private land. Our empirical study focuses on the conservation of forest habitats in rural areas surrounding the city of Auckland, New Zealand. Planning techniques that have been implemented by local authorities to facilitate nature conservation by private landowners are described. The need to plan for a regional conservation estate with reference to principles of ecology is highlighted and we report on an initial attempt to provide a regional ecological assessment of the Auckland reserve network. Recommendations for future conservation management initiatives are proposed.
