Agriculture and landscape in The Netherlands: The fourth report on physical planning (1988)
AbstractHighly productive agricultural land use results in a continuous change of landscapes in The Netherlands. Economic and environmental problems necessitate a reconsideration of the future of rural areas. The question is whether agriculture will continue to specialize and industrialize production methods, or find a new harmony with other types of land use and adjust to environmental constraints. In the Fourth Report on Physical Planning (1988) the Dutch Government formulates a long term policy proposal.Important issues are: - how to make explicit choices for the maintenance or renewal of the structural framework in regions where agriculture and landscape are in disharmony;- how to promote the potential use of the land with special attention to nature and touristic values;- how to reinforce the position of agriculture in highly urbanized areas. In the coming years the elaboration and implementation of these policies will act as guidelines for extensified agricultural land use as well as for the development of industrialized agriculture.
