Measurement of saline ice thickness using a step frequency radar
AbstractExperiments were conducted on artificial saline ice to assess the capability of Step Frequency Radar in determining the thickness of saline ice. Electromagnetic ranging of saline ice is difficult because of high transmission loss at higher frequencies. The Step Frequency Radar which emphasizes the use of the phase information can alleviate this difficulty by lowering its frequency for better penetration at the cost of limited loss in resolution and accuracy.Slabs of saline ice produced under controlled conditions were stacked up with thin spacers in between and a step frequency radar was used to determine the location of an aluminum sheet inserted at various depths in the stack. Experiments were repeated to study the parametric effect of the salinity, thickness and inhomogeneity of the ice on the performance criteria of the radar, which included the thickness resolution, the depth of penetration and the optimal orientation of the antennas. The zooming offsetting capability of the radar was also investigated.
