Effect of reuse of high-BOD wastewaters for crop irrigation on soil nitrification
Abstract Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) of wastewater is an important criterion for judging the suitability of wastewaters for irrigation. Wastewaters with a wide range of BOD (0 to 1000 mg/L) were used for irrigation of a variety of crops. Soil NO3N and NH4N were monitored before sowing and after harvest of crops, thrice a year for a period of six years. This paper gives an account of the seasonal changes in soil pH, EC, NO3N, and NH4N as affected by wastewaters with five levels of BOD. The work indicates the significance of the growing-season temperature on nitrification and other aerobic processes in the soil, particularly, under irrigation with wastes having higher oxygen demand.
