Comment on “Aeroelastic design optimization of thin-walled subsonic wings against divergence” [Thin-Walled Struct., 47 (2008) 89–97]
Abstract A paper titled “Aeroelastic design optimization of thin-walled subsonic wings against divergence,” published in the Thin-Walled Structures Journal presents an exact solution for calculating divergence condition of subsonic wings by solving the dimensionless governing equation of motion of a thin-walled wing structure. Furthermore, an optimum wall thickness at wing's root and the thickness slope are found to make the wing more efficient against divergence by maximization of divergence velocity. After thorough investigation of the paper's mathematical modeling, some mistakes have been discovered. This comment reviews the theoretical analysis section of the aforementioned paper, which is called the reference paper afterwards, and presents the correct form of the equations followed by a discussion on the validity of the reference paper's results. Authors of this comment would like to express their appreciation for the great research work that has been reported by L. Librescu and K. Y. Maalawi in the reference paper.
