The Columba hotel: A five-storey structure in timber frame
AbstractThe recently completed five-storey extension to the Columba Hotel in inverness comprises the first four-storey timber frame kit construction to be erected in Scotland and is believed to be the first timber framed kit designed to withstand progressive collapse requirements. The client, North British Trust Hotels, required a five-storey extension at the rear of their hotel, to be constructed within a short shut down period during the winter season. To meet the required programme it was considered that timber frame construction was the most suitable method available which could be completed within the given time scale. Extending the use of timber frame to five-storey hotel buildings meant that the limitations of this type of construction within the Scottish Building Regulations were almost reached: the maximum height possible before compartmentation is required is 15 m, and the building height is approximately 14.5 m. This paper describes the design and construction in general terms and the basis used for design to meet progressive collapse requirements is explained.
