Relationship between the number of stops and headway for a fixed-route transit system
Abstract This study investigates relationships between two basic parameters of the fixed-route transit system operation: number of stops (stations) and headway. These two parameters are important determinants of the level of service and the cost of operation. Assuming a single route transit system, a model was developed to determine the optimum combination of the number of stops and headway which can be operated by a given fleet size. It was found that, for each given fleet size, there exists for each of the two parameters a unique value which minimizes the average user travel time. The sensitivities of the values to the changes in fleet size and passenger volume are also conducted using examples.
