Cost optimum design of doubly reinforced concrete beams
Abstract An algorithm to calculate the optimum dimensions and the amount of reinforcements for a doubly reinforced rectangular beam is presented. The method is based on ultimate strength design using rectangular stress block for concrete. Dead weight of the beam is incorporated as a variable. Cost of Concrete, cost of steel and cost of formwork are considered. The procedure is based on some logical assumptions made using the available literature on singly reinforced beams. A simple equation to determine whether a doubly reinforced concrete beam is more economical than the singly reinforced cross section has also been presented. A flow chart represents the sequence of operations. A numerical example is worked out to further clarify the design steps involved.
