AbstractTamil Nadu, one of the largest states in India, has assigned very high priority to the housing sector. The author, through this paper, has broughouut the entire gamut of the various development efforts the government launched to coincide with the International Year of Shelter for the Homeless. The experience of Tamil Nadu has been included in this volume to acquaint readers with a representative case of the housing activity in India at the state level, and to emphasize the need to assign due weight to simultaneous development of all sectors of housing. The programmes also need to be coordinated centrally through conscious planning and implementation. The types of p programmes described in this paper are common for most of the states of India. The paper will also help readers to visualize the extent of the problempprofessionals are confronted with today in India in the shelter sector. (Ed.)
