AbstractThe Agua Fria River in Arizona (USA) is examined, focusing on an evaluation method for riparian areas. The evaluation method, modeled after the US Soil Conservation Service's agriculture land evaluation and site assessment system, provides a means to rank river segments based on natural functions, values, and benefits. The evaluation method may also be used to determine appropriate buffer widths for stream corridor protection. Ten transects of the river are field checked to provide data for the evaluation method. The discussion includes a summary of previously used riparian classification and recommended buffer widths for stream corridor protection.
