Wind tunnel measurement of velocity profiles in complex terrain. Case of alpine regions
AbstractAn important problem for mountainous regions is the description of the influence of orography on wind fields. This is particularly important in order to determine wind extremes acting on constructions such as bridges, TV towers, or public buildings tourist installations. An analysis of wind behavior is also necessary for the study of snow drifting on highways. The objective of the present paper is to describe the experimental technique used to reproduce flow in Alpine regions, and to show the important changes which can be observed in the vertical velocity profiles measured at different location distant of several hundred meters in nature.Comparisons with in-situ measurements show that scale modeling in wind tunnels reproduces to a large degree the variability of the wind speed observable in nature.
