Option value and non user benefits of wildlife conservation
Abstract This paper reviews the concept of option value in relation to consumer surplus, as a means of measuring the benefits of wildlife conservation. An empirical assessment of option value and the willingness to pay for wildlife conservation at three SSSIs was undertaken by an expressed preference or contingent valuation survey. While such a survey permits the estimation of option value and consumer surplus, the results differ from revealed preference estimates. A variety of reasons are seen to contribute to the current questionable nature of contingent valuation assessments of option values and the inability of multivariable statistics to explain expressed preference results. Suggestions are made for more relevant variables to be incorporated in future empirical studies.
