Prediction of the ultimate load-carrying capacity of wooden notched beams with and without reinforcements using a splitting model
Highlights Prediction of the ultimate load of wooden notched beams based on a splitting model. The predictive model uses the R-curve of wood in mode I and II. Tests were carried out on scale one notched beams. A new failure scenario for reinforced notched beams was highlighted and considered.
Abstract The present study proposes a new method to predict the ultimate load bearing capacity of structural notched beams subjected to splitting. Reinforced and unreinforced cases are investigated by using a FE-model for splitting failure. The contribution of mode I and mode II in the crack extension mechanisms is implemented in the numerical model by considering a mixed mode criterion established on the R-curves of wood. The influences of the notch and the reinforcements on the resulting quasi-brittle behaviour is analysed. The FE-prediction are compared to experimental data and the current design rules of the Eurocode 5.
