Duration of strong earthquake shaking
Abstract This paper summarizes recent developments in the analysis, interpretation and estimation of the duration of strong earthquake ground shaking in a form suitable for routine applications. It presents two empirical scaling models for estimating the duration in terms of (1) the Modified Mercalli Intensity at the site, and (2) the magnitude and epicentral distance. Both models consider the influence of (a) the frequency of motion, (b) horizontal or vertical component direction, and (c) the depth of sedimentary deposits beneath the site on the duration of shaking. It is shown that the depth of sedimentary deposits beneath and surrounding the site should play a significant role in the empirical estimation of the duration of strong earthquake shaking.
