Chernobyl and its radiological and socio-economic consequences for the province of Salzburg, Australia
AbstractDue to increased washout effects during the passage of the Chernobyl-cloud Salzburg-Province experienced 137Cs deposition in excess of 20 kBq/m2 in April 1986. In this paper environmental effects are discussed, differentiating between urban environment and food producing industries. Based on several thousand measurements in the year following fallout deposition radiological, economical, and social consequences in the Province are analysed. Compliance with restrictive measures taken by regulatory agencies resulted in a significant dose reduction for members of the public, comparable to values typical for the natural environment at a cost of about 5.6 million US dollars.
