Preloading with prefabricated vertical strip drains
AbstractIn recent years, prefabricated vertical strip drains have almost entirely replaced conventional sand drains as the preferred method to speed up the consolidation of soft cohesive soils under preloaded embankment fills. The paper summarizes recommended procedures for the geotechnical site characterization and laboratory testing required to obtain design parameters for vertical drainage projects. Recent research on drain characteristics, particularly the geotextile filter sleeve and the core discharge (well) capacity as they influence design and performance, are described. Costs, installation, specifications, and problems associated with the installation of drains under geosynthetic reinforced embankments are also briefly mentioned.
