Structural behaviour and design of roll-formed Aluminium Lipped Channel beams subjected to combined bending and shear
Abstract Experimental and numerical investigations were conducted in this study to explore the structural behaviour and design of Aluminium Lipped Channel (ALC) beams subjected to combined bending and shear actions. Finite element models were developed and validated using test results. The ultimate strength results obtained from the tests and parametric study were compared with those estimated using current design rules. It was found that the current design rules are too conservative to predict the ultimate capacities of ALC beams subjected to combined bending and shear. Hence new design equations were proposed in this study to accurately predict these ultimate capacities.
Highlights Investigated the structural behaviour of ALC beams under combined bending and shear actions. Experimental studies were conducted for bending and combined actions. Numerical studies were conducted for shear, bending and combined actions. Current cold-formed steel design rules were not suitable for ALC beams under combined actions. New design rules were proposed for ALC beams under combined actions.
