Welded steel box-columns under biaxial loading
AbstractThe present study is concerned with the strength of welded steel box columns subjected to biaxial loading. A numerical integration scheme is proposed to investigate the inelastic behaviour of such columns which are pin-ended. The column cross section is assumed to be compact in which there is no local buckling. Moment-Curvature-Thrust relationships are obtained by using the tangent stiffness method. The column analysis is carried out by integrating numerically the Moment-Curvature-Thrust relations along the length. Due allowance is made to account for the presence of residual stresses and column initial out of straightness. The ultimate load carrying capacity of the column is obtained with the aid of an extension of Horne's stability criterion. Comparisons are made between the predicted strength and published experimental results and close agreement between the results is observed. Results are presented in the form of interaction diagrams.
