Heuristic determination of postal delivery routes
Abstract The objective of this study was to develop a systematic approach to the routing of postal deliveries which would decrease the total distance traveled. Consideration was given only to the routing of delivery of a given scheme (a collection of streets to be delivered). The selection of streets to comprise a scheme was not of concern. Furthermore, attention was restricted to motorized residential routes. By decomposing the overall delivery problem into small components, it is possible to determine lines-of- travel. These in turn dictate areas to be served.
