Public realm design
Urban issues for US mid-western cities
AbstractUrban design frameworks have superseded the rigid master plan concept and replaced it with a flexible design strategy. They form a tool which can produce and manipulate three dimensional models, through easily accessible computer graphics, rather than cumbersome and inflexible architectural models. In such a process, the public realm plan does not normally concern itself with finite building proposals but shows an arrangement which might include, for example, streets, pedestrian networks, other movement systems, and public places. A study of Cincinnati challenges the conventional block by block approach to urban renewal and redevelopment. Among the rustbelt cities of Ohio, Cincinnati has distinguished itself in its rapid and successful downtown regeneration over the past decade. Yet its relative unpopularity as far as shoppers are concerned suggests that something more imaginative than ad hoc development is required. The downtown study attempts to provide possible strategies and solutions.
