Tests for the water resistance of construction sealants
AbstractBSI technical committee, ECB/3, has in its programme of work the developmene of w test for the ability of building and construction sealants to resist exposure to water. A major objective of this test programme was to determine the minimum duration of water immersion which is necessary to enable the effects which cause a decrement in joint performance to be simulated in the laboratory.The performance of a range of commercial sealants has been measured by the changes in the modulus and extensibility of test joints after various durations of immersion in tap water. The results show that, in general, immersion for84 days is insufficient to produce the decrement in joint performance that would be seen in prolonged fully-immersed conditions. However there is some justification for using short term immersion for sealants that are to be used in building joints.
