Essential typologies for the construction industry
Abstract An integrated design support system, one that can deal with the actuality of the construction industry, must access information from that industry. This paper describes the lack of coordination in the industry and in the social infrastructure that provides construction information. It shows how this lack of coordination disables easy information access. To improve the access to information, the paper identifies some common features in different information sources: buildings, rooms, building components, and building products; a strategy is then developed for achieving a standard typology for each feature. The paper reasons that such standardization does not have to be adopted by the industry, but only by the software that accesses industry databases.
