Some unusual alkali-expansive aggregates
Abstract The subgreywackes from the quarry at Alert, Ellesmere Island, N.W.T., Canada, have been found by length-change tests to have a definite potential for causing expansion of concrete by a type of alkali-aggregate reaction. The rocks are physically sound but have petrographic affinities with known alkali-expansive rocks in the maritime provinces. Rocks of this sort may be recognized by a petrographer familiar with this type of problem.
