Oxidative chlorination of ethylbenzene and isopropylbenzene
Abstract 1. A study was made of oxychlorination of ethyl- and isopropylbenzene with a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and hydrochloric acid. It was shown that vigorous stirring (over 400 rev/min) the reaction takes place in the kinetic range. 2. On using 36% hydrochloric acid and a molar ratio of Ar : HCl : H2O2 of 1 : 1 : 1, yields of chlorethyl0 and chlorisopropylbenzenes are 28 and 23 and with a ratio of 1 : 6 : 1 they increase to 91 and 80% respectively. An increase in the concentration of the aromatic compound to 10 mole results in the formation of ortho- and para-isomers.
