Continuous solid-substrate fermentation of feedlot waste with grain
AbstractA process was developed to rapidly and continuously recycle animal waste by fermenting it in a mixture with coarsely cracked corn. The particulate waste-grain substrate at 40–45% moisture was tumbled in a three-chambered cylinder equipped with mixing baffles and rotated horizontally on its long axis at 0·5 rpm. The fermentor operated with a retained quantity of 7·5 kg waste-grain mixture and a throughput of 205 kg day−1. Small amounts of waste and grain were introduced simultaneously at short intervals into one end of the cylindrical vessel to achieve residence times of 54–108 h. Lactobacilli (1010 g−1) and yeasts (108 g−1) invariably dominated the fermentation regardless of residence time. The fermented product had a silage-like odor, and the lactic and acetic acids produced during the fermentation essentially eliminated fecal coliforms when the pH stabilized at approximately 4·1 over a residence time of 100 h or more.
