GIS in Britain: The Chorley report and the regional research laboratory initiative
Abstract The publication of the Chorley Report on Handling Geographic Information in 1987 must be regarded as a landmark in the development of geographic information systems (GIS) technology in Britain. The paper discusses the main recommendations of the Chorley Report and reviews the British Government's response to them. A British research and development initiative which was singled out in the Chorley Report for special commendation is the Regional Research Laboratory initiative. In the second part of the paper the main features of this initiative are described and some examples are given of the kind of tangible products that have already been produced by this research programme.
