The Turkwel hydropower project near the Kenyan Rift Valley (East Africa)
Abstract The Turkwel Gorge hydroelectric power scheme, with a thin arch dam (155 m high and 150 m crest length), currently under construction, is original in as much that it is located in the vicinity of a collapse zone of the great East African Rift. The rock formations found at the dam site range from metamorphic series to intrusive granite of Precambrian age belonging to the Arabian-African Shield. The authors considered that such a location would be of great interest for the study of relations between the geological and geodynamic context and the geotechnical features governing the manner in which civil works are to be designed and executed.
