Influence of nonlinearities in oscillations on along wind gust response of R/C chimneys
Abstract Gust response factors (GRF) based on nonlinear dynamic analysis—including the PΔ effect as well as the stiffening effect of concrete—are calculated. All sample structures analysed show clearly that, beyond the design wind velocity, the GRFs based on nonlinear dynamic analysis are somewhat larger than those obtained from linear analysis. This fact can be explained by the softening of the structure when it enters the highly nonlinear range. The stiffening effect of the concrete proves to be insignificant for both linear and nonlinear dynamic analyses.
