A mathematical model of storm surge in the Vistula Lagoon, Poland
Abstract In the Vistula Lagoon the storm surge is induced by variable sea levels and wind action. The unsteady flow is described by well-known shallow water equations. These equations are usually solved using the finite difference method or the finite element method. In this paper an Alternating Direction Implicit Method coupled with the finite element method is applied. In this approach for the spatial discretization of equations in x- and y-directions the finite element technique is used. The sets of nonlinear algebraic equations have been solved by using the Newton method. Testing based on the observation data showed that the proposed algorithm is effective and gives satisfactory results.
