Preparation and characterization of anti-freezing asphalt pavement
Highlights Mafilon was used to prepare the anti-freezing asphalt mixture. The anti-freezing effect was evaluated by inclined shear test and peeling test. The effect of Mafilon content on the road performance was studied. A new method was proposed to predict the anti-freezing durability.
Abstract The concept of anti-freezing asphalt concrete (AFFC) has been proposed to create an asphalt mixture with snowmelt and deicing functions. In this paper, the anti-freezing asphalt mixture was designed by replacing the mineral filler with an equal volume of deicing agent Mafilon (MFL). The effect of MFL on the pavement performance of anti-freezing asphalt mixture were studied. Qualitative observation method, inclined shear test, and peeling test were designed to evaluate the anti-freezing performance. Based on the climatic conditions, a method based on freezing point test and immersion test was proposed to quantitatively predict the anti-freezing durability. The experimental results show that the addition of MFL decreases the pavement performance, especially for the water stability. The increase in MFL content results in a more significant anti-freezing effect. After balancing the pavement performance and deicing performance, the recommended dosage of MFL is 50%. Besides, the immersion test showed that the high temperature accelerates the release of MFL, and 60 °C is the suitable temperature to conduct the immersion test. The relationship between the specific gravity of salt solution and the freezing point is found to be linear. Based on the climatic conditions of the engineering location, the anti-freezing durability could be predicted. This research may provide the basis and guidance for the design of anti-freezing asphalt pavement.
