Abstract Factors identified to cause deterioration of library and archival materials in the Delta region of Nigeria are discussed. They include the influence of the environment, the physical and chemical effect of the paper used and the devastating effects of animals and plants. Man's attitude to book use is also discussed as well as the present economic influence on maintenance and security of materials.
