A constitutive equation for temperate firn derived from strain rates of two firn pits (Kesselwandferner, Oetztal Alps, 1967–1989)
AbstractA constitutive equation of temperate firn is derived from strain rate measurements of two firn pits in the accumulation area of Kesselwandferner (Oetztal Alps), carried out from 1967 to 1978 and from 1983 to 1989. This constitutive equation is composed of two terms. The first term (deviatoric term) describes changes in shape with constant volume; the second term (isotropic term) describes changes in volume with constant shape. The constitutive equation reduces to Glen's Flow Law for incompressible ice as limiting case. The deviatoric and the isotropic terms are expressed by an exponential function of density. The dependence upon stress of the isotropic term is given with a new set-up, using a power law.
