Applying the discrete vortex method to flow about bluff bodies
AbstractNumerical modeling of separated flow about a bluff body requires special treatment of several flow features. Principal among them are: discrete representation of shear layers, interaction among vortices, and the perturbation required to accelerate the development of flow past a body.Algorithms which model these features in two-dimensional applications of the discrete vortex method are presented in this paper. Computed flow patterns and aerodynamic forces acting on square and rectangular prisms, and a bridge-deck section are presented and compared with the experimental data. The unsteady nature of flow patterns is shown to be well predicted by the computations. Excellent agreement between the computed and experimental data is found for the Strouhal number, while the agreement for aerodynamic forces is found to be satisfactory.
