Abstract Urban growth and change in post-second world war USA has been on a dramatic scale, giving rise to a large (and continually expanding) library of books on urbanization, suburbanization, counterurbanization, the rise of the ‘sunbelt’ cities and the decline of ‘frostbelt’ cities. A recent book from the UK reveals an uncanny similarity with trends in that country.
