Size distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in Chinese cities
AbstractAirborne particulate matter from five Chinese cities was fractionated in a five-stage high volume cascade impactor (> 7 μ, 7-3.3 μm, 3.3-2 μm, 2-1.1 μm, <1.1 μm) and analysed for nine polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), phenanthrene, fluoranthene, pyrene, benz[a]anthracene, chrysene, benzo[e]pyrene, benzo[a]pyrene, indeno[1,2,3-—c,d]pyrene, benzo[ghi]perylene, by capillary column gas chromatography with H2 as carrier gas and total methylpyrene in particles by GC-MS and GC.The observed distribution patterns are similar between cities. Most PAHs with >4 rings (84%) were found in <3.3 μm particles. The size distribution of different PAHs shows that the more rings in a PAH, the smaller the mean mass diameter (MMD) that was found. Thus the more PAHs with >4 rings which can be inhaled deeply into the alveolar, the greater the influence on human health. These results were compared with results from Xuanwei County (area of high mortality from lung cancer in China). The MMDs of particles in Xuanwei County tend towards smaller MMDs than in other cities and the methylpyrene/pyrene rate is twice as high. This implies that a special mechanism producing abundant methyl-PAH is present in a burning process in Xuanwei.
