Parameter identification and probabilistic prediction of settlement of embankment
AbstractThe finite element method is a useful analytical tool for predicting grounddisplacement such as settlement when an embankment is constructed. The accuracy of the finite element analysis depends on the precise estimation of soil properties. However, reliable soil properties cannot always be obtained easily. To overcome such limitation, a numerical technique developed in the field of system identification is introduced into the finite element method by applying the random field theory. Furthermore, reliable predictions of settlement based on the stochastic finite element analysis can be performed using the results thus identified. This paper describes the formulation of the method and presents the applicability of the proposed method through the use of an embankment example.
