New-generation pavement empowered by smart and multifunctional concretes: A review
Highlights Full-scale and actual application property of new-generation pavement was reviewed. New-generation pavement was developed with smart and multifunctional concretes. Smart and multifunctional concretes make pavement eco-efficient, serviceable, and durable. Future challenges for application of smart and multifunctional pavement are discussed.
Abstract Smart and multifunctional concretes have the capabilities of self-sensing, self-adjusting, self-healing, self-luminous, self-purifying, sound-absorbing, and energy-harvesting, etc., through incorporating functional fillers, thus recently attracting major research interests to produce new-generation pavement infrastructures. Using smart and multifunctional concretes to build pavement can make it more eco-efficient, serviceable, reliable, and durable, thus improving traffic operating safety and efficiency. The related researches on smart and multifunctional pavement concretes have been widely carried out in the laboratory, but the corresponding results have limited guidance on engineering applications of smart and multifunctional pavement concretes due to the size effect and the huge environment differences between laboratory research and actual service environments on-site. Therefore, this paper presents an overview on the latest research advances and findings of smart and multifunctional pavement concretes, especially focusing on its full-scale test and actual application performance. Meanwhile, the future challenges in the development and application of smart and multifunctional pavement concretes are also discussed to provide useful ideas and practical guidance for developing new-generation pavements with sustainability and longevity.
