Selection of pressure linings used for trenchless renovation of water pipelines
Highlights Requirements towards pressure linings were redefined to facilitate their selection. New classification of water pipelines was proposed to ease renovation planning. Potential of 44 technologies for water pipe renovation were analyzed. New method for selection of pressure linings used for water pipe renovation was elaborated.
Abstract Through proper renovation planning it is possible to prevent from further structural deterioration of water pipelines as well as to ensure water quality. This can be difficult since requirements towards pressure linings (especially for semi – structural and structural) used for that purpose are not precisely defined. Another problem is that there is no classification of water pipelines elaborated in order to facilitate selection of linings falling into different classes. This paper shows the new method for selection of different pressure linings used for water pipeline renovation. The method itself is based on a multi – objective selection algorithm applied here to find such a set of linings, which will satisfy structural, hydraulic and installation criteria at the same time. The novelty of the proposed algorithm lies in the redefinition of basic requirements towards pressure linings resulting in the further extension of their classification. The algorithm also incorporates the new classification of water pipelines based on 5 classifiers, which help to assign a suitable class of a lining for a water pipeline selected for renovation. Final values for these classifiers are determined by a decision maker depending on the Final values for these classifiers are determined by a decision maker depending on the ability of water pipelines to sustain its loadings, their leak – tightness, type and sizes of defects observed in their construction, appearance of external corrosion. In order to verify their method, the authors used the data on pressure linings provided courtesy of their manufacturers. The data on water pipelines were provided through field measurements or by local public utility. A case study shows that the presented method is a good tool to be used for management and improvement of water supply systems. It allows for selection of the appropriate type, class and thickness of a lining to be used for water pipeline renovation.
