Optimization of the buckling load of columns and frames
Abstract Single buckling mode columns and frames of a given volume are optimized numerically in order to obtain the highest resistance against buckling. In the optimization process, the uniformity of the specific bending energy due to the fundamental buckling mode plays the role of the objective function. The procedure uses the finite element method (FEM) and makes use of the ANSYS program to solve the eigenvalue problem in each step of the iteration. The numerical examples analysing various configurations of columns and frames under specified loading conditions demonstrate the convergence of the procedure. Some limitations of the method are discussed as well.
