Wind engineering beyond the boundary layer wind tunnel
Abstract The boundary layer wind tunnel has been the foundation of the development of wind engineering as a sophisticated scientific discipline. However the limitations inherent in its use are now limiting its potential as a major research tool. Sophisticated knowledge based on the assumption of gradient winds may not be relevant to wind effects from extreme wind events such as thunderstorms or tropical cyclones which are the dominant events for strength design in many regions. This paper looks at this problem and the directions in which research may need to go if it is to address the most significant gaps in current knowledge.
